Take Action
To'hajiilee Community School
Southwest Trip April 25
During our Southwest trip, we visited the To'hajiilee Community School. While there, we learned about the To'Hajiilee culture and traditions, toured the school, and volunteered with the elementary school kids. My group worked with the fourth grade class, helping them with a biography of a New Mexican governor, a New Mexico scavenger hunt, and weaving. This fits under the pillar Take Action because we used our time to assist in the learning of these kids and have an exchange of culture. We also brought gifts for the school, which were very appreciated. This experience helps to answer my overarching question by showing how Native Americans today are working to revive their culture and keep their language and traditions alive.

IBL (Inquiry Based Learning)
English- January In English and History, we created and researched the question of how the oppressive nature of the United States has lead to detrimental health conditions in Native American populations. We then created an advocacy piece broadcasting the information we found to answer this question in the form of a social media campaign with the username MakeIt_HAPPN. With a group of 3 others, we created an Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter account where we posted info-graphics we created about Native American healthcare conditions, and how the condition of life on reservations is far below the rest of the United States due to lack of adequate health care. We spent a lot of time creating posts and then presented our project to our English class. This assignment also works to answer my question relating to the undermining of Native culture and self determination by revealing how the United States has a history of neglecting Native Americans by failing to provide adequate health care, which has had detrimental effects on the Native population and their self determination. |
